July 1, 2017 marks the 20th Anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to our Motherland and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
Since our return to the Motherland, the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy have been successfully implemented in Hong Kong. With the staunch support of our country, the concerted efforts of all sectors of the Hong Kong community and the co-operation of the Mainland provinces and municipalities, Hong Kong has made good progress in its social and economic development. The 20th Anniversary of our return to the Motherland is a significant milestone and it is time for us to consolidate the unique combined advantages of "one country" and "two systems" that Hong Kong enjoys. Building on what we have achieved, we will work towards the further development of Hong Kong and make greater contribution to our country.
The theme for the 20th Anniversary is "Together‧Progress‧Opportunity", aiming to showcase the successful implementation of "one country, two systems", bringing about social cohesion and unity, and building up confidence and seizing opportunities.
"Together" means how Hong Kong people can help each other under various challenges, contribute to the country and achieve support; and deepen their extensive international network link, locally and overseas.
"Progress" means the HKSAR is still a work in progress in many ways. We have gained much experience implementing "one country, two systems" over the past 20 years. The HKSAR has a good story to tell in various areas including economic data, social indicators, sports and cultural pursuits, green living, heritage protection, care for the underprivileged and etc. In the future, we will continue to make the best use of our strengths and abilities as a distinct and different system within the one country for mutual benefit.
"Opportunity" means Hong Kong should seize the opportunities from the Mainland's Belt and Road Initiative and play the role of "super-connector" well by moving up the value chain and providing Mainland and overseas partners with professional, value-added services.
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, the HKSAR Government organizes a series of activities in Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas to share with members of the public the joy of celebrating the 20th Anniversary.
GDETO will also organize a series of celebrations in the five provinces/region (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan) including large-scale exhibitions, cultural performances, concerts, photo competitions, film festivals, etc., to encourage mainland public to actively participate and share the joy of 20th Anniversary.
GDETO has set up an event platform for the 20th Anniversary celebration events held in the five provinces/region. Public are welcome to view the platform to obtain latest information about the events. Details of the events will be updated from time to time and be disseminated through GDETO’s wechat.
