Fujian Liaison Unit Organized “Hong Kong ∙ Music – KJ Wong x Set Tone Men” Concert, Bringing Hong Kong Music Culture to Xiamen

Using their voices to mimic the sound of different instruments, with their diverse singing techniques and harmonious voices, and their new interpretation of various HK and international popular songs, Set Tone Men showcased HK’s distinctive culture with a blend of East and West. Enthralled audience joined the performance by clapping on the beat, bringing the stage and the audience into one, offering the audience a unique live experience.

KJ Wong delivered a stunning performance with his fast and dazzling techniques in playing several classical pieces, including Bach’s《D major Prelude and Fugue" Preude》, Ligeti’s 《The Devil's Staircase》, Scriabin’s 《Piano Sonata No. 4》and Liszt’s 《Dante Sonata》.

At the enthusiastic request of the audience, the music concert ended at the peak with a HK classic song performed by Set Tone Men and KJ Wong together. Both the performers and the audience enjoyed a rich and diverse musical feast.

Over 750 participants attended the concert held on 5 Nov 2016 at Xiamen Hongtai Hall. Apart from Fujian audience (including Fujian Provincial and Xiamen Municipal Government officials, teachers and students of universities in Fujian, Fujian-based HK people, HK students, and representatives of HK-invested companies, as well as Xiamen music lovers), some audience travelled from Shanxi, Henan and Hainan to attend the concert. The audience gave enthusiastic applause and expressed that the concert was very enjoyable, and found the concert fully reflected the essence of HK as the international cultural city of charm and the diversity of HK culture. They wished that FJLU could bring more cultural performances from HK to Fujian in future.

In addition, to promote cultural exchange between the youth of Fujian and Hong Kong, FJLU co-organized with the Art College of Xiamen University a piano master class, conducted by the young pianist KJ Wong for the music students of Xiamen University and exchanged with them on piano performance, in the morning of 6 November 2016. It attracted 50 teachers and students of Xiamen University to sit in the class. The participants found the master class very inspiring.

KJ Wong and Set Tone Men also shared with the audience their thoughts and aspiration on music, and their music path at the exchange session after the concert. The audience’s response was very positive and they were very enthusiastic in sharing their views on the performance. They also found the format of the concert, incorporating classical music and pop music, a brand new and refreshing approach.

To enhance cultural and youth exchange between Hong Kong and Fujian, and promote HK’s music culture, the FJLU of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region organized two concerts titled “Hong Kong ∙ Music – KJ Wong x Set Tone Men” at Xiamen Hongtai Hall and Arts College Hall of Xiamen University on 5 and 6 November 2016 respectively to showcase the music culture of HK young generation to Xiamen’s public. KJ Wong, a famous HK young pianist, and Set Tone Men, an a cappella group, were invited to stage their first performance in Xiamen.
